USING THE TOILET PROPERLY IS IMPORTANT FOR GOOD HYGIENE AND TO PREPARE TODDLERS FOR NURSERY. USE THE GUIDE BELOW TO TEACH YOUR CHILD HOW TO USE THE TOILET.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
Is your child ready to start toilet training?
Is there enough time to keep a consistent routine?
Can other people that look after your child continue the toilet training?
Are you prepared to carry a potty everywhere you go whilst toilet training?
SIGNS YOUR CHILD IS READY
They have dry nappies for periods of an hour or more
They know when they have a wet or dirty nappy
They tell you when they are going to the toilet
They show the need to go toilet by fidgeting or going somewhere quiet or hidden
They know when they need to go toilet and may tell you in advance
TOILET TRAINING IN 3 STEPS
FAMILIARISE
Start introducing the potty into your child’s daily routine
Keep an accessible potty in the bathroom and or in a place your child can go to it quickly
Encourage your child to use the potty after meals as digesting foods leads to needing the toilet
TRAINING PANTS
Swap nappies for potty training pants
Encourage your child to keep their training pants dry through using the potty
If your child struggles to realise when they are wet, line the nappy or pants with some tissue
STAYING DRY
Focus on getting your child toilet trained before you start leaving their nappy off
If your child’s nappy is continuously dry or damp through the night, begin to put them in pants and put them on the potty during the night
Be patient, understanding and calm. Toilet training is a long and frustrating process.
If your child gets upset or does not want to use the potty, do not force them
When your child has an accident, remain calm and do not make them feel bad about it
Give lots of praise when they use the potty
When you use the toilet, encourage your child to use their potty
If you notice your child needing the toilet, encourage them to use their potty
TOILET ROUTINE
Use toilet
Wipe
Flush
Wash hands
When your child can use the potty consistently, introduce them to using the toilet. Use a simple routine to help your toddler remember what to do when using the toilet and to maintain good hygiene.
