BIRTH METHODS

THERE ARE VARIOUS BIRTH METHODS. USE THE GUIDE TO UNDERSTAND EACH METHOD AND TO HELP YOU CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONE

HOME BIRTH

  • Being in your own home
  • Shouldn’t have to travel to hospital
  • Not being separated from your partner after the birth
  • Increased chance of your preferred midwife
  • Not safe for high risk pregnancies
  • Hospital transfer in the event of an emergency
  • Epidurals are not available 
  • Having to clean, birth can be very messy
  • If issues occur, travel to hospital increases risk

MIDWIFERY UNIT/BIRTH CENTER

  • Most units are within hospitals
  • Shorter stay after birth
  • More comfortable than hospitals (large bed, birthing pool, ect.)
  • More freedom and privacy
  • Not as safe for high risk pregnancies
  • Hospital transfer in the event of an emergency
  • Epidurals are not available 
  • Public or private center
  • Lack of centers
  • Possible transfer to hospital
  • Partner cannot stay overnight
  • Not usually equipped for high risk pregnancies

HOSPITALS

  • Direct access to professionals
  • Epidurals and other pain relief 
  • Special care units if needed
  • Safest option in case of emergencies
  • No confirmation of who will deliver your baby
  • Medical intervention if labour is taking too long
  • Safest option for high risk pregnancies
  • Long stay after birth
  • Hospital environment is impersonal
  • Lack of privacy
  • Partner cannot stay overnight

HOSPITAL IS RECOMMENDED IF:

  • You have high blood pressure
  • You require specific pain medications
  • Labor isn’t progressing
  • You have vaginal bleeding that isn’t related to bloody show
  • Your baby is not positioned correctly
  • Your baby is showing signs of distress before delivery 
  • Baby’s poo is found in your amniotic fluid
  • You face complications like placental abruption  or umbilical cord prolapse
  • Your baby shows signs of a medical condition or difficulty breathing 
  • The placenta isn’t delivered properly or within 60 minutes of birth
