PANIC ATTACKS

HAVING A BABY IS A LIFE CHANGING EVENT THAT CAN IMPACT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH AND TRIGGER STRUGGLES, HOWEVER WITH SUPPORT AND APPROPRIATE TREATMENT IT CAN IMPROVE

It is not your fault that you’re panicking and having panic attacks does not mean you’re a bad parent. There is a range of support and treatments available including free support services at the bottom of the page. Seeking support does not mean your baby will be taken away as this only happens in very exceptional circumstances.

WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY

  • Close your eyes and focus on your breathing
  • Breathe slowly and deeply
  • Think of peaceful and relaxing things
  • Breath in for 5 seconds then breath out for 5 seconds
  • Remind yourself the attack will pass, usually between 20-60 minutes

SYMPTOMS

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Shaking
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Choking sensation
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling hot/cold

TREATMENTS

  • Learning breathing techniques for panic attacks
  • Talking to friends, family or professionals
  • Joining groups for parents
  • Increasing physical activity such as walking, running, jogging
  • Reading books on anxiety/panic disorder
  • Trying relaxing therapies such as massage
  • Avoiding sugary food & drinks, caffeine, alcohol and smoking
  • Psychological therapy
  • Medicines
