RISKS

There are many risks to babies. and it is our job to protect them. However some things are uncontrollable and babies need to learn. Use the guide to be aware of risks in order to keep your baby safe

CHOKING

  • Keep small objects such as batteries and coins out of reach
  • Cut food into small sticks and avoid hard foods
  • Stay with your child when they’re eating
  • Only use age appropriate toys

SUFFOCATION

  • Do not use pillows or duvets with babies under the age of 1
  • Tuck blankets into the sides of baby’s bed
  • If you use a sling, follow TICKS (Tight, In view, Close, Keep chin off chest, Suport)
  • Keep plastic and nappy bags out of reach

STRANGULATION

  • Avoid dummy clips longer than 20cm and clips with small pieces like beads
  • Do not leave any type of rope or cord around such as blind cords or drawstring bags 
  • Keep play equipment away from washing lines, pack line away when not in use
  • Avoid cot bumpers or any unnecessary decoration around your baby’s bed

FALLS

  • Do not leave your baby unattended on a bed, sofa or changing table
  • Always keep chairs and bouncing seats on the floor
  • Be very careful when carrying baby not to fall or trip especially down stairs
  • Secure your baby properly in a highchair or pram 

POISONING

  • Keep all medicines locked away and out of reach
  • Keep cleaning and washing products out of reach
  • Keep all smoking products out of reach 
  • Check your garden and outside areas for poisonous plants

BURNS

  • Keep hot drinks out of reach and do not hold them over baby
  • Always shake bottles of milk and test temperature on wrist
  • Take care with appliances like irons and straighteners and keep the cords out of reach
  • Keep all batteries and washing products out of reach to avoid internal burns

DROWNING

  • Always stay with your baby when they are in the bath
  • If you have a pond or water feature safely secure it
  • Watch babies when in swimming pools, even in floatation aids
  • Make sure your home area is secure to avoid drowning hazards

FIRE

  • Fit and test smoke alarms on every level of your home, check them regularly
  • Switch off electrical items before you go to bed and close all doors to contain a potential fire
  • Always use a fireguard around fires, make sure guard attaches to wall around fireplaces
  • Work out an escape plan for your family and teach your children what to do in case of a fire
