UMBILICAL CORD

UMBILICAL CORD TIPS

  • Usually falls of in 1 to 15 days
  • Keep the cord clean and dry
  • The colour of the cord will continue to darken until it falls off
  • Do not use any products as it can cause infection

CARING FOR THE CORD

  • Wash hands before cleaning cord
  • Bath or wash 3x per week with warm water
  • Pat dry with a soft cloth
  • Fold down front of nappy or cut out area to prevent rubbing on cord

INFECTION

If your baby has any of the following symptoms seek medical advice.

  • Swollen and red
  • Signs of pain when touching the area
  • Weeping and strong smell
  • High temperature (38°C or above)
  • Not eating
  • Lethargic

BELLY BUTTON

After the cord falls of there will be a small wound on the area. It should take 7 to 10 days to heal and may bleed. When healed the belly button is formed. If the area does not heal within 10 days or you have any concerns please seek medical advice.
